Susan found her inner artist in a very round about way through her life. After graduating from Houghton in 1967 and MSU in 1971 she spent 6 years in the Army. Some of that time was spent in Germany where she learned to love the local folk art, something that would resurface years later after starting a corporate career while staying in the Army Reserves. In 1987, while attending a military school, she found a small art shop where the German folk painting was being taught, so she decided to take the class and, as they say, the rest is history. She was hooked and pleased to find a talent that she didn't know she had. Susan painted all she could to perfect techniques, learned more about regional arts while living in Japan and traveling to Korea. Since then she has studied two styles of Russian painting, Norwegian Rosemaling and finally branched into the decorative painting used in homes and businesses for walls. Along with that she learned to do murals and has painted the sets for three of the PMMF opera productions. After several years of "imitating" other styles of art, Susan wanted to finally develop a style of her own. Being most familiar with acrylics and having moved back to her roots where life in the woods is a favorite pass time, the leaf prints started to grow. Then, in the winters when there weren't any leaves, she started experimenting with merging the leaf prints with favorite photographs of the area. She offers both framed prints and note cards along with the originals of the leaf panels.
